Dr. Seuss Field Day- Station 5

station 5- Yertle the TurtleI recently learned about an awesome Dr. Seuss-inspired field day planned and organized by Patti, an elementary school PE teacher. Here is one of her 21 stations:

Station 5

Title: YERTLE THE TURTLE

Skills: GROSS MOTOR COORDNIATION, TEAM WORK

Description: DIVIDE THE CLASS INTO 4 TEAMS. ONE TEAM IN EACH CORNER OF THE COURT. STUDENTS LINE UP BEHIND EACH OTHER. ON GO, THE FIRST STUDENT SITS ON SCOOTER (CAN GO FORWARDS OR BACKWARDS) AND SCOOTS TO THE POND (CENTER OF COURT). THEN THE STUDENT PICKS UP A TURTLE AND SCOOTS BACK TO YERTLE’S POND (HULA HOOP BY THEIR CORNER) AND PLACES THE TURTLE ON THE ROCK (UPSIDE DOWN PAPER PLATE). THEN 2ND PLAYER  GETS ON SCOOTER AND GO TO GET THE NEXT TURTLE. WHEN THEY RETURN THAT TURTLE MUST BE STACKED UPON THE ONE ON THE ROCK (SEE WHAT TEAM CAN STACK THE TALLEST TURTLE STACK TO BECOME KING OF THE POND). IF A TURTLE STACK FALLS BEFORE THE END OF THE GAME THAT TEAM MUST RESTACK THEIR FALLEN TURTLES BEFORE ANOTHER ONE OF THEIR TEAM MEMBERS CAN SCOOTER OUT TO THE CENTER POND TO PICK UP ANOTHER TURTLE.

    • You know, I’m really not sure. I assume there are a number of things from a PE supply closet you could use. Anything a kid can pick up and stack relatively easily. For upper grades, make it more challenging if you want. If you try this, let me know what you use!
