States of Matter Graphic Organizer

States of Matter STICKEROne of the most important parts of learning is to be able to connect the content to your own life. This is what I’m trying to help my students do with this worksheet on states of matter (3rd grade common core standard for science). When completing this page (identifying states of matter), I encourage the kids to find answers in their own lives: in the classroom, at their house, etc. This page works well as a homework page, so kids can walk around their house looking for states of matter.

Technology in our Lives

Technology in our lives STICKERI made this a few days ago for a friend. She teaches 2nd grade, and need a way to teach an AZ science standard (standard 3 concept 2) about technology in society. This seemed like a good way to start the unit. Each idea on the page is something the students are probably already familiar with. Kids match the picture with the benefit/use of that technology.

Rocks & Soil Page

Rock soil STICKERMy friend teaches first grade. Their class is just wrapping up their unit on rocks and soil (Common Core science standards for 1st grade). I made this graphic organizer for her to give as a fast-finisher after the test or as a review activity . She hasn’t decided which she’ll use it for yet. It asks students to draw places they might find/use soil and rocks.

Free SeaWorld Ticket for Teachers (2014)

SeaWorld tickets stickerI recently heard about a cool promotion SeaWorld is doing for teachers. Here’s the explanation from the website:

“The education staff at SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment invites you to visit your local SeaWorld park and let us help inspire you. For several years, SeaWorld has offered a complimentary teacher pass for some teachers located in Florida, Texas or Southern California where our parks are located.  The pass provides you with complimentary admission to the park and access to our education team to help you incorporate our knowledge , passion and experience with marine animals into your classroom.

Each park has different eligibility requirements, so click on your local park to find out more.  And when you visit our park, seek out our education staff located at many of the animal exhibits or ask to visit our education departments and we’ll be happy to share how we can help incorporate marine science education into your classroom.”

Tickets valid in 2014, but some parks do the program every year. Some parks require an earlier registration for the ticket, so check the website using the links above.

States of Matter Science Activities for Kids

Here are some fun activities I’ve seen recently that deal with states of matter (solid, liquid, gas):

Great visual and foldable for states of matter (source)

Life cycle of a snowman (source)

Encourage kids to write journals about experiments with states of matter. This one involved observing butter and chocolate left outside in the sun (source)

The Atoms Family (Science Song!)

Atoms Family STICKER

One second grade teacher submitted this cute idea for introducing magnets and electricity:

“This is really a great way to start a unit on atoms etc.  Atoms are the basics for understanding magnets and electricity.  Magnets and electricity is what all our technology is based on.  I’m not a scientist, but understanding that made me want to talk about atoms before we dove into magnets and electricity so that science would make sense and not just be a bunch of fun experiments, with nothing tying it all together.

This is a link for a PowerPoint story on atoms and then the song on atoms if you want to use it. The PowerPoint has the song lyrics, and then gets more detailed.  I don’t use the whole thing, just parts of it.”

Teaching Kids to Drink Water!

Potter the Otter sticker

I recently found this adorable children’s ebook (from the California’s FIRST 5 program) called, Potter the Otter: A Tale about Water. It’s written in English and Spanish and include cute illustrations and some activities at the end to help kids see how much better water is for our bodies (compared to juice or soda pop). In the story, little Potter teaches his animal friends the benefits of water. This is a simple, quick read that has a big lesson for all of us, children and adults alike!

Fire Prevention Week

Fire Prevention Week 2013 will be October 6 – 10. Most teachers won’t be able to spend a lot of time discussing fire prevention, so the National Fire Prevention Association has made a few quick activities for you to use, that will actually support what you’re teaching in school. For example, the NFPA has a kitchen safety checklist you can discuss. Why not have your kids circle 10 nouns, highlight 10 verbs, etc. while you go over the sheet? Grammar practice!! And for lower grades, use the Stay Safe in the Kitchen story for some quick comprehension practice.
