Dr. Seuss Field Day- Station 14

Station 14- Horton Hatches the EggI recently learned about an awesome Dr. Seuss-inspired field day planned and organized by Patti, an elementary school PE teacher. Here is one of her 21 stations:

Station 14

Title: Horton Hatches the Egg

Skills: Balance, gross motor, fine motor, hand/eye coordination

Description: Divide class into 4 to 6 teams

Pre-K and K can use scoops

1-5th can use paddles

On go, Horton (students) carry a plastic egg on their paddle. Go around the cones over the hurdles across the logs around the cone and back and passes the paddle and egg to next team member. If their egg drops they must stop and pick it up and start from where they stopped they continue until time is up see how many trips their team can make.

Station 13

Title: I WISH I HAD DUCK FEET

Skills: GROSS MOTOR AND BALANCE

Description: DIVIDE CLASS INTO SIX TEAMS LINE UP BEHIND STARTING LINE.  HAVE 1ST STUDENT GET INTO POTATO SACK ON GO STUDENTS MUST (HOP) SACK RACE DOWN AROUND THE CONES AND BACK. THIS RACE ENDS.  THEN THE NEXT GROUP RACES. (THIS WAY STUDENTS ARE NOT TRYING TO GET OUT OF THE SACKS QUICKLY AND ACCIDENTALLY RIPPING THE SACKS)

Dr. Seuss Field Day- Station 12

Station 12- The Lorax vs the Once-lersI recently learned about an awesome Dr. Seuss-inspired field day planned and organized by Patti, an elementary school PE teacher. Here is one of her 21 stations:

Station 12

Title: The Lorax vs. The Once-lers”

Skills: agility, gross motor

Description: Scatter at least 40 Frisbees (representing the Truffula Trees) inside the playing area (white square) with half of the Frisbees lying top side up and half of the Frisbees lying bottom side up(looks like a bowl) up. In this event there are 2 groups ­ the Lorax (representing Truffula Trees getting planted or picked up) and the Once-lers (representing Truffula Trees getting chopped or knocked down). One group will wear pinnies to distinguish between the two groups. On the signal to begin, the Once-lers job will be to flip each Frisbees that is lying top side  up over to look like a bowl and the Lorax’s job will be to flip each Frisbees up (so it does not look like a bowl. They will run from Frisbees to Frisbees to do their jobs. Volunteers will stop play after 1 minute to change how they are moving. For example, after the first minute they will walk backwards, and after the second minute is up they will skip. The volunteers should then change the student’s job with the Lorax (up) now becoming a Once-ler (down). Let them run again, then hop, and slide. This event will continue until time has been called.
**Note: Do not allow students to use their feet to kick over Frisbees. Only hands may be used to flip the Frisbees over and put them up.

Description: CLASS MAY CHOOSE OR TRY ANY OBJECT TO JUGGLE WITH (MORE OBJECTS THAN HANDS)

YOUNGER STUDENTS (pre-1st) CAN USE DIFFERENT OBJECTS TO PLAY CATCH WITH THEMSELF OR A PARTNER.

Title: I Am NOT Going to Get Up Today!

Skills: gross motor, team work

Description:

“I Am Not Going To Get Up Today”
“You can pour cold water on my head
But you’re wasting your time.
So go away!
I am NOT going to get up today!”

 Divide students into 5 equal teams with the first person from each team standing inside a starting hoop. On the signal to begin, these players pick up a sponge from the trashcan filled with water. The must pass the sponge over their head to the next person in line. The players continue passing the sponge over their heads until it gets to the last player in line. The last person squeezes the sponge into a bowl then this person will take the sponge back to the front of the line, dunk the sponge in the trashcan and begin passing it over their heads again. Teams will continue to go until time has been called. The team with the most water in the bowl wins.

Title: HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU

Skills: BALANCE, AGILITY AND EYE/HAND COORDINATION

Description: DIVIDE STUDENTS INTO 5 TEAMS LINE UP BEHIND EACH OTHER ON GO 1ST PERSON WILL RUN TO THE CAKE PILE (FOAM CIRCLES) PICKUP 1 PIECE RUN BACK AND PLACE IT INTO THEIR CAKE RING.

TEAMS WILL CONTINUE TO RACE 1 PERSON AT A TIME TO GET PIECES THEY MAY ONLY TAKE 1 PIECE AT A TIME.  WHEN THEY RETURN THEY MUST PLACE THEIR PIECE ON THE CAKE (ONCE PIECE IS PLACED YOU CAN NOT TOUCH OR RE-STACK IF A PIECE FALLS OFF IT CAN NOT BE RE-STACKED TEAMS RACE TO BUILD THE TALLEST CAKE WITH OUT IT FALLING OVER. IF A TEAM IS CAUGHT REBUILDING THEY ARE DISQUALIFIED AND MUST SIT DOWN TILL THE NEXT ROUND. WHEN THE ENTIRE CAKE PIECES ARE USED THE JUDGE (YOU) WILL SEE WHO HAS THE TALLEST CAKE THAT TEAM RECEIVES A POINT. START A NEW ROUND IF TIME ALLOWS.

Title: YERTLE THE TURTLE

Skills: GROSS MOTOR COORDNIATION, TEAM WORK

Description: DIVIDE THE CLASS INTO 4 TEAMS. ONE TEAM IN EACH CORNER OF THE COURT. STUDENTS LINE UP BEHIND EACH OTHER. ON GO, THE FIRST STUDENT SITS ON SCOOTER (CAN GO FORWARDS OR BACKWARDS) AND SCOOTS TO THE POND (CENTER OF COURT). THEN THE STUDENT PICKS UP A TURTLE AND SCOOTS BACK TO YERTLE’S POND (HULA HOOP BY THEIR CORNER) AND PLACES THE TURTLE ON THE ROCK (UPSIDE DOWN PAPER PLATE). THEN 2ND PLAYER  GETS ON SCOOTER AND GO TO GET THE NEXT TURTLE. WHEN THEY RETURN THAT TURTLE MUST BE STACKED UPON THE ONE ON THE ROCK (SEE WHAT TEAM CAN STACK THE TALLEST TURTLE STACK TO BECOME KING OF THE POND). IF A TURTLE STACK FALLS BEFORE THE END OF THE GAME THAT TEAM MUST RESTACK THEIR FALLEN TURTLES BEFORE ANOTHER ONE OF THEIR TEAM MEMBERS CAN SCOOTER OUT TO THE CENTER POND TO PICK UP ANOTHER TURTLE.

Title: ONE FISH, TWO FISH, RED FISH, BLUE FISH.

Skills: TEAM WORK, BALANCE AND AGILITY

Description: DIVIDE STUDENTS INTO 5 EQUAL TEAMS WITH THE FIRST PERSON FROM EACH TEAM STANDING INSIDE A STARTING HOOP. ON THE SIGNAL TO BEGIN, THE PLAYERS PICK UP THE “FISH BOWL” (PLASTIC BOWL REPRESENTING THE FISH BOWL IN THE STORY) AND RUN TO THE TRASH CAN FILLED WITH WATER AND PLASTIC FISH. STUDENTS WILL FILL UP THE FISH BOWL WITH WATER AND ONLY ONE FISH. BALANCING THE FISHBOWL ON TOP OF THEIR HEAD. THE STUDENT MUST WALK BACK TO THE LINE WITHOUT (TRYING NOT TO) USING THEIR HANDS TO KEEP THE FISHBOWL ON THEIR HEAD. IF THE STUDENTS MAKES IT BACK TO THE LINE WITHOUT DROPPING THE FISHBOWL, THEY DUMP THE WATER AND FISH IN THE BUCKET AND HAND THE BOWL TO THE NEXT PLAYER IN LINE.IF THE FISHBOWL FALLS OFF THE STUDENT WILL PICK UP THE BOWL AND FISH AND RETURN TO THE LINE TO HAND OFF THE BOWL TO THE NEXT PLAYER IN LINE. TEAMS WILL CONTINUE TO GO UNTIL TIME IS UP.
